Honestly, it was all we could afford; I started to love VT after graduation

It was the 80s, we had no money and I had gone to community college for two years. I had to transfer somewhere. Roanoke College offered me a sizable scholarship, but their costs were so high that even with the scholarship I couldn't go. VT cost $962 per quarter for 12 hours, and any credits above 12 hours were FREE. You read that right. FREE.

That was a clincher for my family. I took almost all 18-hour quarters (6 classes) and one 21-hour quarter (with dean's permission) in order to graduate in another two years - four years total of college. No student loans.

I enjoyed VT. But I didn't get the full experience. I was given the comms department's outstanding graduate award, and helped found VT's first Society of Professional Journalists student group. And through those activities, I got to know my profs better, and after graduating I came back a few times. And the more people I met from VT, the more I liked the school. Because there is something real and honest about VT grads. We are not pretentious. We're regular, good people. At least in my experience.

I probably love VT now more than I did as a student.
